1923 · Oil is Discovered on the Navajo Reservation

Age 5

Oil was discovered on the Navajo Reservation in the 1920's. The Navajos did not want to lease any of the land towards the exploration for oil and gas. They were soon made a deal that they would be hired for all unskilled work if they would lease the land and, reluctantly, they gave in. Albert Fall, a Senator from New Mexico and was extremely hostile towards Indian rights.
1931 · The Prehistoric Minnesota Woman

Age 13

The Minnesota Woman was the name given to the skeletal remains of a woman thought to be 8,000 years old found near Pelican Rapids. The bones were brought to the University of Minnesota for more study. Later, Dr. Albert Jenks identified them as the bones of a 15 or 16 year old woman. Scientists now recognize the girl as someone whose ancestors were Paleo-Indian and now her skeletal remains have been reburied in South Dakota, not available for further study.
