1887 · New Zealands's First National Park

Age 1

Tongariro National Park was the sixth national park established in the world and the first in New Zealand. In the center of the park there lies three active volcanic mountains (Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro). it is home to the famed Tongariro Alpine Crossing day hike and has been recognized as a World Heritage Site for all its natural values.

Name Meaning

Japanese: ‘fragrant river’; held by two families, one from Kagawa in Sagami (now Kanagawa prefecture), descended from the Kamakura branch of the Taira clan. The other family originated in Kagawa in Aki (now part of Hiroshima prefecture). In Okinawa, the name is written with characters meaning ‘deer river’.
