1889

Weber comes from John Henry Weber, an early fur trader. The university opened for students on January 7, 1889. By the late 1920's, the college was in financial difficulty and the Utah Legislature passed a law allowing the purchase of both Weber College and Snow College from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1954 the college moved from downtown Ogden the southeast bench area of the city where it resides currently.

1896 · Utah Becomes a State

After three prior attempts to become a state, the United States Congress accepted Utah into the Union on one condition. This condition was that the new state rewrite their constitution to say that all forms of polygamy were banned. The territory agreed, and Utah became a state on January 4, 1896.

1909 · The NAACP is formed

Organized as a civil rights organization, The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is a bi-racial endeavor to advance justice for African Americans. It is one of the oldest civil rights organizations in the nation.

Name Meaning

English: habitational name from Butterfield (Yorkshire) or from any of several other minor places with the same name. The name is derived from Old English butere ‘butter’ + feld ‘field’ or ‘open country’.

History: Benjamin Butterfield came to Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1638. John Butterfield (1801–69) was born in Berne, NY, and founded an express company that merged with other companies to form the American Express Company (1850).
