1881 · The Assassination of James Garfield

Age 2

Garfield was shot twice by Charles J. Guitea at Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1881. After eleven weeks of intensive and other care Garfield died in Elberon, New Jersey, the second of four presidents to be assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln.

1882 · The Chinese Exclusion Act

Age 3

A federal law prohibiting all immigration of Chinese laborers. The Act was the first law to prevent all members of a national group from immigrating to the United States.

1885 · The First Skyscraper

Age 6

The Home Insurance Building is considered to be the first skyscraper in the world. It was supported both inside and outside by steel and metal that were deemed fireproof and also it was reinforced with concrete. It originally had ten stories but in 1891 two more were added.

Dutch: from Middle Dutch pickel ‘leg’, hence a nickname for someone with long or otherwise remarkable legs, or a metonymic occupational name for a carpenter.

Americanized or Germanized form of Slovenian Pikelj, Pikel, or Pikl: from pikelj, a word of South German origin (see above and Bickel ), denoting a kind of pick used by miners.
