1948 · The Beginning of the Cold War

The Berlin Blockade was the first major crises of the Cold War. The Soviet Union blocked all access to the sectors of Berlin under Western control and offered to drop the blockade if the newly introduced Deutsche Mark was removed from West Berlin. The Berlin Blockade showed the different ideological and economic visions for postwar Europe. Even though there wasn't any fire fight during the cold war, many of these skirmishes arose and almost caused nuclear war on multiple occasions.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is an alliance between 29 North American and European countries. The agreement of the alliance is to help defend each other if attacked by an external country. The last country to enter was Montenegro in 2017.

On 1 Jan 1974,Lexington became the first Kentucky community to consolidate city and county governments into a single system. The merger of Lexington city and Fayette County governments was the result of almost four years of planning. The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government remains Kentucky's only merged government.
