    Thousand Days' War. Around 120,000 people die in civil war between Liberals and Conservatives. Panama becomes an independent state.

    1899-04-22: National Congress decreed a return to the twenty states of 1864. This change was embodied in the new constitution, which was adopted on 1901-04-13. The 1901 constitution defined the states to be the same as under the 1864 constitution, with the following names changed: Guayana to Bolívar.

    Panama splits from Colombia and becomes fully independent. U.S. buys rights to build Panama Canal and is given control of the Canal Zone in perpetuity.

    Spanish: Castilianized form of Portuguese and Galician Landeiro, a topographic name from landeiro ‘oak producing many acorns’, or a habitational name from any of several places called Landeiro, from lande ‘acorn’. This surname is most common in Mexico.
