New Testament name: the Latin form of the name of the addressee of St Luke's gospel and the Acts of the Apostles; also borne by various early saints. It is composed of the Greek words theos ‘god’ + philos ‘friend’, and was popular among early Christians because of its well-omened meaning ‘lover of God’ or ‘beloved by God’.
