When Odile Roegiers was born on 11 February 1909, in Sleidinge, East Flanders, Belgium, her father, Camillus Roegiers, was 21 and her mother, Mathilde De Schauwers, was 21. She died on 11 December 1999, in her hometown, at the age of 90.
From the medieval Germanic name Odila, a derivative of od meaning ‘prosperity, wealth’; borne by a 8th-century saint who founded a Benedictine convent at what is now Odilienburg in Alsace; she is the patron saint of Alsace.
