St. Louis hosted the 1904 World's Fair and welcomed a crowd of 200,000 visitors on opening day of April 30, 1904. The fair had exhibits from 50 countries and 43 states. Several notable inventions showcased at the fair include iced tea and the ice cream cone. By the time of its closing in December 1904, over 20 million people had visited the fair.

When W. D. Boyce was visiting London, he encountered a boy that helped him find his destination. The boy refused the tip that Boyce offered to him and told him that he was just doing his daily good turn. One of the earliest of the Charleston, SC, Middleton family of prominent legislators was Arthur Middleton, born in Charleston in 1681. The name has also been established in Ireland since at least the 13th century; its presence was reinforced by settlers in the 17th century.
