Name Meaning

Americanized spelling of French Bélier, a nickname from Old French belier ‘ram’. The nickname no doubt refers in many cases to sexual prowess, but since belier also means ‘battering ram’, it may sometimes have been applied to a man of powerful build. This name is now frequent in New England.
