Brief Life History of Alfred

Alfred Nelson was born on 12 May 1889, in Denmark as the son of Hans Nelson and Karen Thomsen. He married Ida Caroline Carlsen on 21 February 1917, in Shelby, Iowa, United States. They were the parents of at least 4 daughters. He immigrated to United States in 1891 and lived in Webster, Keokuk, Iowa, United States for about 10 years and Union Township, Madison, Iowa, United States in 1940. He died in June 1969, at the age of 80, and was buried in Winterset, Madison, Iowa, United States.

1890 · The Sherman Antitrust Act

This Act tried to prevent the raising of prices by restricting trade. The purpose of the Act was to preserve a competitive marketplace to protect consumers from abuse.

1890 · Woman's Suffrage

An organization formed in favor of women's suffrages. By combining the National Woman Suffrage Association and the American Woman Suffrage Association, the NAWSA eventually increased in membership up to two million people. It is still one of the largest voluntary organizations in the nation today and held a major role in passing the Nineteenth Amendment.

History: The Nelson name was an important one in 18th-century VA, starting with Thomas ‘Scotch Tom’ Nelson, who emigrated to VA at the close of the 17th century from Penrith, Cumbria, where the Nelsons were numerous. Scotch Tom settled c. 1700 at Yorktown, VA, where he became a successful merchant and landholder. His son was sheriff and a member of the VA Council, and his grandson, Thomas Nelson (1738–89), a signer of the Declaration of Independence, was governor of VA.
