In 1860, South Carolina quit the United States because its citizens were in favor of slavery and President Lincoln was not. The Civil War started a year later.

This Act was to restrict the power of the President removing certain office holders without approval of the Senate. It denies the President the power to remove any executive officer who had been appointed by the president with the advice and consent of the Senate, unless the Senate approved the removal during the next full session of Congress. The Amendment was later repealed.

Americanized form of German Breler, itself an old (extinct) variant of Brehler: topographic name, concentrated in the area around Fulda, from Middle High German brüel ‘watery, wet meadow’. Compare Breeland .

Norwegian: habitational name from the farm name Bre(i)land, from brei ‘wide’ or bre ‘glacier’ + land ‘(piece of) land, farmstead’.

History: The progenitor of the majority of the American Brelands was Hans Georg Breler from Salzschlirf near Fulda, Germany, who arrived in PA c. 1755. He and his sons changed their surname, which was recorded in various very different spellings, to Breland some time after 1790.
