When Alfred Bell was born on 16 August 1794, in Rowan, North Carolina, United States, his father, William Francis Bell II, was 34 and his mother, Sarah McGuire, was 26. He married Jane Graham Haynie on 5 July 1821, in Sumner, Tennessee, United States. He registered for military service in 1812. He died on 17 February 1874, in Lehi, Utah, Utah, United States, at the age of 79, and was buried in Lehi, Utah, Utah, United States.

1799 · Gold Nuggets Found

In 1799, in Little Meadow Creak located in Cabarrus County, North Carolina a large yellow ""rock"" was found by Conrad Reed. A few years later it was determined that the ""rock"" was a gold nugget.

1800 · Movement to Washington D.C.

While the growth of the new nation was exponential, the United States didn’t have permanent location to house the Government. The First capital was temporary in New York City but by the second term of George Washington the Capital moved to Philadelphia for the following 10 years. Ultimately during the Presidency of John Adams, the Capital found a permanent home in the District of Columbia.

This indicates either residence by an actual bell (e.g. a town's bell in a bell tower, centrally placed to summon meetings, sound the alarm, etc.) or ‘at the sign of the bell’, i.e. a house or inn sign (although surnames derived from house and inn signs are rare in Scots and English).
