He married Mary Willis on 22 July 1821, in McLeansboro, Hamilton, Illinois, United States. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 5 daughters. He lived in Hamilton, Illinois, United States in 1830 and Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois, United States in 1839. He died on 8 July 1852, in Hall, Nebraska, United States, at the age of 54, and was buried in Hall, Nebraska, United States.

The First capital was temporary in New York City but by the second term of George Washington the Capital moved to Philadelphia for the following 10 years. Ultimately during the Presidency of John Adams, the Capital found a permanent home in the District of Columbia.
