When Martin Littlewood was born on 28 January 1817, in Saddleworth, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom, his father, John Littlewood, was 31 and his mother, Frances Martin, was 43. He married Sarah Elizabeth Muir on 16 August 1835, in Manchester, Lancashire, England. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 4 daughters. He immigrated to Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois, United States in 1841 and lived in Utah, United States in 1870 and Payson, Utah, Utah, United States in 1880. He died on 20 February 1898, in Provo, Utah, Utah, United States, at the age of 81, and was buried in Payson City Cemetery, Payson, Utah, Utah, United States.

After the Saints had been chased out of Missouri they moved to a swampy area located next to the Mississippi River. Here they settled and named the place Nauvoo which translates into the city beautiful.

Name Meaning

English (mainly Yorkshire): habitational name from a lost place called Littlewood in Cartworth, Yorkshire, named with Old English l̄ȳtel ‘small’ + wudu ‘wood’. Occasionally perhaps from unidentified places called Littlewood in Worcestershire and Kent.
