When Stephen Carter Hales was born on 3 November 1849, in Garden Grove, Decatur, Iowa, United States, his father, Stephen Henry Hales, was 29 and his mother, Eveline Lydia Carter, was 28. He married Jane Alice Crosby on 18 December 1871, in Endowment House, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 3 daughters. He lived in Bountiful Election Precinct, Davis, Utah, United States in 1900 and District 1451, Crisp, Georgia, United States in 1910. He died on 4 July 1916, in Cordele, Crisp, Georgia, United States, at the age of 66, and was buried in Sunnyside Cemetery, Cordele, Crisp, Georgia, United States.

1850

Named after the early pioneer leader Daniel C. Davis the County was established as a territory in 1850.The territorial legislature created Davis County in 1852 and designated its County seat at Farmington-midway between boundaries-the Weber River on the north and the mouth of the Jordan River on the south. Westward the County includes a portion of the Great Salt Lake-its largest island on which Antelope Island State Park is now located.During first half-century Davis County grew slowly.It supported a hardy pioneer people engaged in irrigation agriculture and raising livestock.The Utah Central Railroad(now the Union Pacific crossed the County from Ogden on the north to Salt Lake City on the south in 1870 and offered welcome transportation links to bring manufactured products.This was the beginning of a transition in the County's history that led to mechanized agriculture, a surge of commerce, banking, and local business along with improved roads, new water systems, and the electrification of homes and business

1857 · The State Capital moves to Des Moines

The Capitol was located in Iowa City until the 1st General Assembly of Iowa recognized that the Capitol should be moved farther west than Iowa City. Land was found two miles from the Des Moines River to start construction of the new building. Today the Capitol building still stands on its original plot.

1867 · The Burtis Opera House

The Burtis Opera House opened in Davenport and could easily hold an audience of 1,600. It was a widely used facility and Mark Twain filled the house when he spoke on tour in 1869. It was also used to house Susan B. Anthony when she lectured on the woman's right to vote. The Quad City Symphony Orchestra played its first concert as the new Tri-City Symphony in the Opera House. An arsonist set fire to the building on the evening of April 26, 1921, and the building was severely destroyed. The building was rebuilt but was no longer used as an opera house.
