When William Carroll McClellan was born on 12 May 1828, in Shelbyville, Bedford, Tennessee, United States, his father, James McClellan, was 23 and his mother, Cynthia Stewart, was 18. He married Almeda Day on 19 July 1849, in Pottawattamie, Iowa, United States. They were the parents of at least 7 sons and 5 daughters. He lived in Payson, Utah, Utah, United States for about 10 years and Brigham City, Apache, Arizona, United States in 1880. He registered for military service in 1846. He died on 28 April 1916, in Colonia Juárez, Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico, at the age of 87, and was buried in Colonia Juárez, Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico.
