Rhoda Frances Vance

Brief Life History of Rhoda Frances

Rhoda Fransis’s childhood was spent inside the fort walls in Alpine, Utah. All the homes in the fort were made of logs and consisted of one or two rooms. Indians killed her father when she was four years old. Fransis married Julius Conrad Beck at the age of 26. They had six sons together. Their youngest son died in infancy. After fourteen years of marriage, Julius was called to serve a mission in Denmark. For two years, Fransis ran the farm and kept the family together with the help of her five remaining small sons. Three of their sons served as soldiers in World War I and one also served a three-year mission to New Zealand. She took care of her son, Horace, as he was dying from typhoid fever that he had contracted during the war. She worked hard and paid off the mortgage on their farm during the depression, even after her husband had passed away. She passed away in January at the age of 73.

Name Meaning

Scottish: apparently a spelling pronunciation of Vans, a misreading of Vaus (see Vause ), in which -u- has been miscopied as -n-. If true, it is probably limited to the Vans or Vaus family of Wigtownshire. It may be this surname that appears in Ireland from the early 17th century, especially in Ulster, but it could alternatively be the English name in 2 below.

English: if not a transcription error for Vause (a surname well evidenced in Warwickshire and Leicestershire), a variant of Vann , with post-medieval excrescent -s.
