When Sarah Jane Barney was born on 13 May 1845, in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois, United States, her father, Charles Barney, was 62 and her mother, Deborah Riffle, was 36. She married Joseph Smith Black on 14 November 1860, in Spring City, Sanpete, Utah, United States. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 6 daughters. She lived in Arco, Blaine, Idaho, United States in 1920 and Mackay, Custer, Idaho, United States in 1930. She died on 22 May 1934, in Leslie, Custer, Idaho, United States, at the age of 89, and was buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Butte, Idaho, United States.

U.S. acquires vast tracts of Mexican territory in wake of Mexican War including California and New Mexico.

1846 · First Nauvoo Temple Dedicated

On May 1-3, 1846, the Nauvoo Illinois Temple was fully dedicated. It was the second temple that had been built by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was the first temple with an angel Moroni on top, in the case of this temple it also doubled as a weather vane. Before the saints left Nauvoo they gathered in great numbers to go through.
