Birthe Hansen

Brief Life History of Birthe

Birthe Hansen was born Birthe Hansdatter May 29, 1824, in Vemmelev parish, Soro, Denmark. Her christening record clearly shows her name was "Birthe," which is the name on all the source documents. She married Jacob Christensen in 1846 in Vemmelev. The couple had two children, Soren Christian Jacobsen and Mary Kristine Jacobsen. Jacob passed away shortly after Mary's birth. Birthe then married Christian Poulsen in 1852. The family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1861 and in 1862 they immigrated to Utah. They traveled to Hamburg, Germany, then embarked on the sailing ship Athena on April 9, 1862, arriving in New York City in June. They traveled by rail and steamboat to Florence, Nebraska, where they were outfitted with wagons. The family then traveled to Salt Lake City in the Ola Nilsson Liljenquist Company, arriving September 23, 1862. Birthe passed away in Providence, Utah, in 1907 at age 82.
