    Name Meaning

English: from Middle English erguil(e), a variant of Middle English orguil(e), Old French orguel ‘pride, arrogance’, hence the variation of Argill and Argile with Orgill . Alternatively, perhaps a variant of Arkell , with voicing of k to g. No evidence has been found to support the idea that this is a habitational name from Argyll, the county of southwestern Scotland, though folk etymology to this effect may be partly responsible for the modern spelling of the surname.
