When John Barton was born on 22 June 1808, in Sunbury, Northumberland, Pennsylvania, United States, his father, Noah Barton, was 43 and his mother, Mary Cooley, was 34. He married Susannah Wilkinson on 29 December 1835, in Sunbury, Northumberland, Pennsylvania, United States. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 5 daughters. He lived in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois, United States for about 6 years and Florence, Douglas, Nebraska, United States in 1846. He registered for military service in 1832. He died on 16 May 1887, in Mount Pleasant, Sanpete, Utah, United States, at the age of 78, and was buried in Mount Pleasant City Cemetery, Mount Pleasant, Sanpete, Utah, United States.

Many people began to rapidly join the Baptist and Methodist congregations. Many converts to these religions believed that the Awakening was the precursor of a new millennial age.
