When Janet Fife was born on 17 February 1828, in South Leith, Midlothian, Scotland, United Kingdom, her father, James Fife Sr., was 24 and her mother, Margaret Mathieson, was 22. She married Joel Hills Johnson on 25 October 1845, in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois, United States. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 2 daughters. She lived in Utah, Utah, United States in 1850 and Utah, United States in 1870. She died on 17 June 1911, in Snowflake, Navajo, Arizona, United States, at the age of 83, and was buried in R V Mike Ramsay Memorial Cemetery, Snowflake, Navajo, Arizona, United States.

1839 · Nauvoo is Settled

After the Saints had been chased out of Missouri they moved to a swampy area located next to the Mississippi River. Here they settled and named the place Nauvoo which translates into the city beautiful.

1850 · Tornado Finishes off the Temple

On May 27, 1850, a tornado came through Nauvoo and took the remaining outer walls of the temple. It was the most frightful thing the city had witnessed. Not just a tornado but also lightening, thunder, wind, hail and rain assailed the spot. Over time what was not destroyed by the storm crumbled until only a small amount was left.

Name Meaning

Scottish: habitational name from the province and former kingdom of Fife in East Scotland, a name of obscure etymology. Tradition has it that the name is derived from an eponymous Fib, one of the seven sons of Cruithne, legendary founding father of the Picts.
