He married Stella "Sally" Waterman on 28 April 1815, in Smyrna, Chenango, New York, United States. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 7 daughters. He lived in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois, United States in 1839 and Salt Lake, Utah, United States for about 10 years. He died on 7 March 1872, in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States, at the age of 80, and was buried in Salt Lake City Cemetery, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States.

1794 · Creating the Eleventh Amendment

The Eleventh Amendment restricts the ability of any people to start a lawsuit against the states in federal court.

1804

Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr had been political enemies with intense personal differences for quite some time. Burr accused Hamilton of publicly disparaging his character during the elections of 1800 and 1804. On the morning of July 11, the two politicians went to Weehawken, New Jersey to resolve the disputes with an official duel. Both men were armed with a pistol. Hamilton missed, but Burr's shot fatally wounded Hamilton, who would die by the following day. The duel custom had been outlawed in New York by 1804, resulting in Burr fleeing the state due to an arrest warrant. He would later be accused of treason, but ultimately be acquitted.

George's sixth-generation descendant, Anson Greene Phelps (1781–1853), rose from being a penniless orphan to the status of a major industrialist and a prominent CT philanthropist.
