Brief Life History of Hiram

When Hiram Gates was born on 11 August 1802, in Brantford, Brant, Canada West, British North America, his father, Henry Gates, was 25 and his mother, Mary Burtch, was 19. He married Polly Mayo on 5 March 1822, in Oakland Township, Brant, Ontario, Canada. He lived in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois, United States in 1839. He died on 5 September 1850, in Greenwood, El Dorado, California, United States, at the age of 48, and was buried in Greenwood Pioneer Cemetery, Greenwood, El Dorado, California, United States.

France sells Louisiana territories to U.S.A.

1803 · The U.S doubles in size

The United States purchased all the Louisiana territory (828,000 sq. mi) from France, only paying 15 million dollars (A quarter trillion today) for the land. In the purchase, the US obtained the land that makes up 15 US states and 2 Canadian Provinces. The United States originally wanted to purchase of New Orleans and the lands located on the coast around it, but quickly accepted the bargain that Napoleon Bonaparte offered.

With the Aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars the global market for trade was down. During this time, America had its first financial crisis and it lasted for only two years.

The English surname Gate has three possible origins: (i) a topographic name from Middle English gate ‘gate’ (Old English geat, dative plural gatum), denoting someone who lived by a gate or set of gates (possibly sometimes an occupational name for a gate keeper; compre Yates); (ii) in northern England, the East Midlands, and East Anglia, a topographic name from Middle English gate ‘street, road, path’ (Old Norse gata) for someone who lived by a road (compare Street ); (iii) a nickname meaning ‘goat’, from northern Middle English gate, gait (Old English gāt, Old Norse geitr).
