He married Maria Johanna Vernhout on 4 May 1854, in Zwolle, Overijssel, Netherlands. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 4 daughters. He died on 9 April 1879, in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States, at the age of 52, and was buried in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States.
