Charles William Carter

Brief Life History of Charles William

Born in London, Charles enlisted as a gunsmith in the 3rd Company of the 12th Battalion Royal Artillery when he was 17. He served at various postings in England and Gibralter at a time when many of his fellow soldiers were sent to Crimea. At the close of the Crimean War, he was posted to Aldershot as Sergeant Major of the 8th Battery, 5th Brigade, Royal Artillery. It was during his career in the military that Carter became first interested in photography. After his discharge from the army, Carter worked in a gallery in Plymouth. In 1863, Carter married Sarah Stockdale (daughter of Michael and Jane). Sarah and her family were Mormons and he himself was baptised 14 May 1864. The couple departed from London on the ship Hudson for New York. They took the train to Wyoming and joined the William Snow Wagon Train for the last leg of the journey to Salt Lake City. From his arrival on 2 November 1862, he began his successful 35 year career as a photographer in Salt Lake City.

1836 · Remember the Alamo

Being a monumental event in the Texas Revolution, The Battle of the Alamo was a thirteen-day battle at the Alamo Mission near San Antonio. In the early morning of the final battle, the Mexican Army advanced on the Alamo. Quickly being overrun, the Texian Soldiers quickly withdrew inside the building. The battle has often been overshadowed by events from the Mexican–American War, But the Alamo gradually became known as a national battle site and later named an official Texas State Shrine.

Name Meaning

English: occupational name for a transporter of goods, from Middle English carter(e) ‘carter’ (Anglo-Norman French car(e)tier, Old French charetier, medieval Latin carettarius, carettator). The Old French word coalesced with the earlier Middle English word cart(e) ‘cart’, which is from either Old Norse kartr or Old English cræt, both of which, like the Late Latin word, were probably derived from Celtic. This surname is also very common among African Americans.

Irish: shortened form of McCarter .

Americanized form of German Karter ‘carder’.
