When Elizabeth Geddes was born on 1 August 1799, in Leadhills, Lanarkshire, Scotland, her father, Robert Geddes, was 25 and her mother, Marion Gibson, was 25. She married Robert McQueen Lindsay on 25 June 1820, in Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, United Kingdom. They were the parents of at least 6 sons and 3 daughters. She immigrated to Utah, United States in 1863 and lived in Pilsworth, Lancashire, England, United Kingdom in 1851 and Kilmaurs, Ayrshire, Scotland, United Kingdom in 1861. She died on 17 October 1873, in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States, at the age of 74, and was buried in Salt Lake City Cemetery, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States.

1800 · Movement to Washington D.C.

While the growth of the new nation was exponential, the United States didn’t have permanent location to house the Government. The First capital was temporary in New York City but by the second term of George Washington the Capital moved to Philadelphia for the following 10 years. Ultimately during the Presidency of John Adams, the Capital found a permanent home in the District of Columbia.

Name Meaning

Scottish: variant of Gaddis , from the lands of Geddes in Nairnshire.

English: possibly a variant of Gedde, a nickname from Middle English gedde ‘pike’ (the fish), with post-medieval excrescent -s. However, the modern surname appears to be entirely Scottish in origin (see 1 above).
