When James Hansen was born on 24 August 1852, in Stokkemarke, Maribo, Denmark, his father, Christen Hansen, was 27 and his mother, Dorthe Sorensen Hansdatter, was 31. He married Mary Ann Shirley on 12 October 1878, in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States. They were the parents of at least 1 son. He immigrated to Wyoming, Otoe, Nebraska, United States in 1866 and lived in Garden City, Rich, Utah, United States in 1880 and Mountain Dell, Uintah, Utah, United States in 1900. He died on 4 April 1932, in Vernal, Uintah, Utah, United States, at the age of 79, and was buried in Maesar-Fairview Cemetery, Maeser, Uintah, Utah, United States.
