1948 · The Beginning of the Cold War

The Berlin Blockade was the first major crises of the Cold War. The Soviet Union blocked all access to the sectors of Berlin under Western control and offered to drop the blockade if the newly introduced Deutsche Mark was removed from West Berlin. The Berlin Blockade showed the different ideological and economic visions for postwar Europe. Even though there wasn't any fire fight during the cold war, many of these skirmishes arose and almost caused nuclear war on multiple occasions.
1953 · The Better Community Council is Organized to Fight Discrimination

The Better Community Council was organized in May 1953 to fight against racial discrimination. The council was involved in speaking out about injustices such as segregated bathrooms, public swimming pools, and public restaurants. The council also lobbied local businesses to sign non-discrimination policies.

Segregation in Mesa elementary schools ended in 1954. Daniel Webster School was built for Mexican American children in 1910. The school integrated in the 1940’s. Booker T. Washington School was a two room school built for African-American children in 1920. The school integrated in 1954.
