When William Barton was born on 30 January 1821, in Lebanon, St. Clair, Illinois, United States, his father, John Barton, was 24 and his mother, Sarah Sally Penn, was 20. He married Sarah Esther West on 26 February 1845, in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois, United States. They were the parents of at least 8 sons and 2 daughters. He lived in Beaver, Beaver, Utah, United States in 1860 and Parowan, Iron, Utah, United States in 1900. He died on 11 October 1902, in Paragonah, Iron, Utah, United States, at the age of 81, and was buried in Parowan Cemetery, Parowan, Iron, Utah, United States.

"In October 1845, the newspaper Times and Seasons published a poem written by Eliza R. Snow entitled ""My Father in Heaven."" It has become the well known hymn, ""Oh My Father."" The song is only one in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints hymnbook that referrs to a Heavenly Mother."
