When William Middleton was born on 24 May 1810, in Saint Clair Township, St. Clair, Illinois, United States, his father, Reuben Washburn Middleton, was 30 and his mother, Elizabeth Morgan, was 26. He married Mary Heady Butler in July 1831, in St. Clair, Illinois, United States. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 4 daughters. He lived in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois, United States in 1839 and Utah, United States in 1870. He died on 15 February 1889, in Ogden, Weber, Utah, United States, at the age of 78, and was buried in Ogden City Cemetery, Ogden, Weber, Utah, United States.

1832 · The Black Hawk War
Convinced that a group of Native American tribes were hostile, The United States formed a frontier militia to stop them in their tracks. Even though Black Hawk was hoping to avoid bloodshed while trying to resettle on tribal land, U.S. officials opened fire on the Native Americans. Black Hawk then responded to this confrontation by successfully attacking the militia at the Battle of Stillman's Run and then left northward. After a few months the militia caught up with Black Hawk and his men and defeated them at the Battle of Wisconsin Heights. While being weakened by hunger, injuries and desertion, Black Hawk and the rest of the many native survivors retreated towards the Mississippi. Unfortunately, Black Hawk and other leaders were later captured when they surrendered to the US forces and were then imprisoned for a year.

Middleton Baggot and Middleton Priors in Shropshire have early spellings that suggest gem̄thhyll (from gem̄th ‘confluence’ + hyll ‘hill’) + tūn as the origin. This surname is also found in Scotland and Ireland.
History: A Scottish family of this name derives it from lands at Middleto(u)n near Kincardine. The Scottish physician Peter Middleton practiced in New York City after 1752 and was one of the founders of the medical school at King's College (now Columbia University) in 1767. One of the earliest of the Charleston, SC, Middleton family of prominent legislators was Arthur Middleton, born in Charleston in 1681. The name has also been established in Ireland since at least the 13th century; its presence was reinforced by settlers in the 17th century.
