1963 · The Second Largest Artificial Lake in the United States

Lake Powell is known as the Second Largest Artificial Lake in the United States, following Lake Mead. It was created by flooding after the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam. The reservoir is named for explorer John Wesley Powell, who explored the Colorado River in 1869 and In 1972, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area was established. Today it is public land managed by the National Park Service, and available to the public for recreational purposes.
