Salt Lake Tribune, The (UT) | 16 June 1993 OBITUARIES ... June 23, 1915 - June 14, 1993 On a sunny June day, our loving husband, Dad, and Grandpa peacefully stepped into eternal life. Marian Dunn Barber, his wife of 51 years, together with his children Joan and Phil Hayes, Marianne and Larry Gatherum, Jeffrey and Linda Barber, Warren and Dorothy Barber, David and Kandie Barber, and Lisa and Stephen Perry, survive him, along with his 16 grandchildren, and one great granddaughter, brother, James L. Barber, sisters, Betty Ashworth and Alice Martinsen. Max was born in Syracuse, Utah, to Vera Frances Oviatte and Riley Elgin Barber. He graduated from Ogden High School and the University of Utah where he was elected Vice President of his class. He was also a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honorary Fraternity, graduating in 1937. He served LDS missions to Great Britain and Texas-Louisiana. He was an active member of the Murray 23rd Ward and Bloomington Hills 7th Ward in St. George, Utah. He served in the United States Air Force during World War II, retiring as a full colonel. He founded Zions Leasing Corporation, where he was a vice president, a subsidiary of Zions Utah Bank Corporation, at the time of his retirement in 1980. He will be fondly remembered by his family and friends for his gentle humor, his love of life and nature, and his devotion to others. Graveside services will be held at 12:30 p.m., Friday, June 18, 1993, at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 East 1300 South. 1916 · The First woman elected into the US Congress

Jeannette Pickering Rankin became the first woman to hold a federal office position in the House of Representatives, and remains the only woman elected to Congress by Montana.

1921 · One of The Oldest Coasters in the World

Utah is home to one of the oldest coasters in the world that is still operational. The Roller Coaster, at Lagoon Amusement park, is listed number 5.

1937 · The Neutrality Act

The Neutrality Acts were passed in response to the growing conflicts in Europe and Asia during the time leading up to World War II. The primary purpose was so the US wouldn't engage in any more foreign conflicts. Most of the Acts were repealed in 1941 when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.
