1899 · The Salt Palace Convention Center

The original Salt Palace was built in 1899 and It stood on 900 South, between State Street and Main Street. The Salt Palace was a frame structure covered in large pieces of rock salt, which gave it its name. The Salt Palace was destroyed by fire on August 29, 1910 and was replaced by the Majestic Hall. This Hall only lasted for a while during the remodel of the Salt Palace. The Salt Palace served as the Olympic Media Center during the 2002 Winter Olympics. Salt Lake Comic Con has been held at the Salt Palace Convention Center since September 2013.

1901 · The Daughters of Utah Pioneers

The Daughters of Utah Pioneers was organized by Annie Taylor Hyde after she invited a group of fifty-four women to her home to find ways to recognize names and achievements of the men, women and children who were the pioneers. They followed the lead of other national lineage societies, such as the Daughters of the American Revolution. They were legally incorporated in 1925.

Name Meaning

English: habitational name from any of numerous places so called, especially Ashton-under-Lyne near Manchester. Most are named from Old English æsc ‘ash tree’ + tūn ‘settlement’; the one in Northamptonshire is (æt thǣm) æscum ‘(at the) ash trees’. Others have been assimilated to this from different sources. The one in Devon is ‘the settlement (tūn) of Æschere’, while the one in Hertfordshire is ‘the settlement of Ælli’.
