She immigrated to Alberta, Northwest Territories, Canada in 1887 and lived in Cardston County, Alberta, Canada in 1911 and Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada for about 19 years. She died on 26 June 1956, in Ogden, Weber, Utah, United States, at the age of 78, and was buried in Aultorest Memorial Park, Ogden, Weber, Utah, United States.

Garfield was shot twice by Charles J. Guitea at Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1881. After eleven weeks of intensive and other care Garfield died in Elberon, New Jersey, the second of four presidents to be assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln.
