1906 · Great San Francisco Earthquake
A 7.8 magnitude earthquake shook San Francisco for approximately 60 seconds on April 18, 1906. A 1906 report by US Army Relief Operations recorded the death toll for San Francisco and surrounding areas at 664. Later reports record the number at over 3,000 deaths. An estimated 225,000 people were left homeless from the widespread destructuction as 80% of the city was destroyed.
1908 · The Salt Lake City Union Pacific Depot
Being listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Salt Lake City Union Pacific Depot dates to the more prosperous era in the history of American railroad travel. Originally called the Union Station, it was jointly constructed by the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroads and the Oregon Short Line. The platforms behind the station ran north-to-south, parallel to the first main line built in the Salt Lake Valley. When Amtrak was formed in 1971, it took over the passenger services at the station, but all trains were moved to the Rio Grande station after it joined Amtrak. In January 2006, The Depot was opened as a shopping center that housed shops, restaurants and music venues.
1927 · Land Covered in Dinosaur Fossils
The quarry was originally found by sheepherders and cattlemen as they drove their animals through the area. The Department of Geology at the University of Utah soon visited the area and found 800 fossils of a variety of Dinosaurs from the Jurassic Era. Because of the proximity of the site to Cleveland, Utah, and because most of the expeditions were financed by Malcolm Lloyd, the site was later known as the Cleveland-Lloyd Quarry. In later years, Princeton college spent three summers at the site. They collected a total of 1,200 bones, part of which were sent back to the school and mounted to complete a full skeleton of an Allosaurus, Utah’s State Fossil. Over the years, excavations led to the collection of more than 12,000 fossils from the quarry. It was designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1965.

The former is named with Old English bere ‘barley’ + hlāw ‘hill’; the latter probably has as its first element the derived adjective beren or the compound bere-ærn ‘barn’. There is also a place of this name in Derbyshire, named with Old English bār ‘boar’ or bere ‘barley’ + lēah ‘woodland clearing’, and one in Shropshire, which is from bere ‘barley’ + lēah.
