Lloyd Ivan Alvord

Brief Life History of Lloyd Ivan

I, Lynn S. Alvord was sealed to my adoptive parents Lloyd and Zelma Alvord in the London Temple in 1960. Lloyd Ivan Alvord, my father, was the oldest of 5 brothers and he married my mother, also the oldest of 5 sisters, although one had died in infancy. Both my parents grew up on farms. My father was worked hard on the farm but describes those days as very happy ones. He served a mission to the Eastern States, thumbing his way around for thousands of miles, and served as the mission secretary, escorting new missionaries as well as visiting church leaders (including John A. Widsoe and Heber J. Grant around New York City. He also played either the part of Joseph Smith or Oliver Cowdery in the first Palmyra pageant. After his mission he married my mother Zelma Thorpe, who had waited for him. He immediately got a job teaching and serving as Principal at a two room school house in Far West or thereabouts, then obtained his formal education first at Utah State University, the eventually receiving his Masters Degree I believe in Moscow Idaho. His lifelong profession was as a school administrator serving at Central High School as assistant principal then as Principal at Wasatch Elementary and Polk Elementary, which I attended while he was Principal. He knew the name of all the students and was well liked and respected by students, faculty and parents. He advocated for a half day off each week for teachers to prepare, which became a statewide program. He also believed in private or charter schools as options. He received honors and many cudos from many. He traveled extensively with his wife and family, including driving our way through Europe. He was very generous with his family and performed much service, not only in the church, but also looked after widows in the neighborhood, doing their taxes for them. He was called upon to be administrator of will and was very well respected and trusted.
