When Nephi Lindsay McLean was born on 3 September 1857, in Kilmaurs, Ayrshire, Scotland, United Kingdom, his father, John William McLean, was 32 and his mother, Marion Geddes Lindsay, was 32. He married Catherine Anderson about 2 November 1884, in Scofield, Carbon, Utah, United States. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 5 daughters. He immigrated to Canada in 1902 and lived in Winter Quarters, Carbon, Utah, United States in 1900 and Alberta, Canada in 1916. He died on 21 December 1942, in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, at the age of 85, and was buried in Temple Hill Cemetery, Raymond, County of Warner No. 5, Alberta, Canada.

Garfield was shot twice by Charles J. Guitea at Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1881. After eleven weeks of intensive and other care Garfield died in Elberon, New Jersey, the second of four presidents to be assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln.
