When James Jens Mortensen was born on 30 June 1852, in Brenderup, Vends, Odense, Denmark, his father, Niels Mortensen, was 29 and his mother, Mettie Hansen, was 29. He married Ida Jane Pease on 25 December 1876, in Oak City, Millard, Utah, United States. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 4 daughters. He lived in Tårnby, Tårnby, Sokkelund, Copenhagen, Denmark in 1855 and Høje Tåstrup, Smørum, Copenhagen, Denmark in 1860. He died on 27 November 1932, in Mesa, Maricopa, Arizona, United States, at the age of 80, and was buried in City of Mesa Cemetery, Mesa, Maricopa, Arizona, United States.
