History: In 1634 the name was brought to North America by the Rev. John Lathrop (born 1584 in Etton, Yorkshire, England), a Puritan preacher fleeing religious persecution. He arrived in Plymouth Colony and lived in Scituate, MA, until 1639, then moved to Barnstable, MA, where his Bible can still be seen.
