She married Frank Iemke Kooyman on 15 October 1907, in Salt Lake, Utah, United States. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 4 daughters. She immigrated to Halifax, Nova Scotia, British North America in 1907 and lived in Salt Lake, Utah, United States for about 17 years. She died on 23 April 1937, in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States, at the age of 59, and was buried in Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, Millcreek, Salt Lake, Utah, United States.

Garfield was shot twice by Charles J. Guitea at Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1881. After eleven weeks of intensive and other care Garfield died in Elberon, New Jersey, the second of four presidents to be assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln.
Louisa Holthuysen, owner of a prestigious house she had inherited from past generations, bequeathed the property to the city of Amsterdam at the time of her passing. Her only request was that the building, and its contents, become a museum known by the name of Willet-Holthuysen. The building remains open to the public, and contains many decorative paintings (including some of unknown origin).
