1812 · War of 1812

Age 0

Because of the outbreak of war from Napoleonic France, Britain decided to blockade the trade between the United States and the French. The US then fought this action and said it was illegal under international law. Britain supplied Native Americans who raided settlers living on the frontier and halting expansion westward. In 1814, one of the British raids stormed into Washington D.C. burning down the capital. Neither the Americans or the British wanted to continue fighting, so negotiations of peace began. After Treaty of Ghent was signed, Unaware of the treaty, British forces invaded Louisiana but were defeated in January 1815.

With the Aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars the global market for trade was down. During this time, America had its first financial crisis and it lasted for only two years.

Name Meaning

1 English: habitational name from a place in the parish of Ormskirk, Lancashire called Aspinwall (also Asmall), from an Old English word æspen ‘growing with aspen trees’ + wæll(a) ‘stream’. There has probably also been some confusion with another Lancashire habitational surname, Aspinhalgh, the second element of which is Old English halh ‘nook’.2 According to Einar Haugen, the Norwegian family name Asbjørnsen has been assimilated to Aspinwall in America.
