When Martha Jane Sayre was born in October 1834, in Dorchester, Westmorland, New Brunswick, Canada, her father, William Pagan Sayre, was 40 and her mother, Jane Ruth Wilson, was 28. She married Icabod Lewis Steeves on 22 December 1853, in Westmorland, New Brunswick, Canada. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 3 daughters. She died in June 1874, at the age of 39, and was buried in Saint John's Anglican Church cemetery, Prince, Prince Edward Island, Canada.
