When Thomasina Kate Marshall was born in 1837, in Onewhero, Waikato, New Zealand, her father, Charles Marshall, was 29 and her mother, Elizabeth Agnes Barrett, was 23. She married Thomas Thompson about 1877, in Port Waikato, Waikato, New Zealand. She died on 16 December 1896, at the age of 59, and was buried in Waiuku Cemetery, Waiuku, Auckland, New Zealand.

The Maori sign the Treaty of Waitangi giving control to the British in exchange for protection and guaranteed Maori possession of their lands.

1840 · New Zealands first Capital

Okiato, today's Russell, was surveyed directly after the Treaty of Waitangi was signed and became a landing post for travelers coming from New South Wales, Australia. It was thought to be the first Capital of New Zealand before it became its own separate colony in 1841. 

1858 · New Provinces Act

The New Provinces Act was established to help create new Provinces in the quickly growing region of New Zealand. This Act also helped kept laws in check as well as create Provincial Councils to help govern over the people within the areas.

It is also borne by Jews, presumably as an Americanized form of one or more similar (like-sounding) Jewish surnames.
