Brief Life History of Rihi or Elizabeth

When Rihi or Elizabeth Herepo was born in 1860, in Auckland, New Zealand, her father, Heremaia Herepo Snr, was 26 and her mother, Raiha Whiorau, was 21. She married John William Ashby on 20 November 1882, in Kawakawa, Far North, New Zealand. They were the parents of at least 8 sons and 4 daughters. She died on 29 June 1939, in Oromāhoe, Far North, New Zealand, at the age of 79, and was buried in Auckland, New Zealand.

1860 · First Taranaki War

The First Taranaki War was an armed conflict between the Māori people and the New Zealand Government over rights of land ownership. It was fought by more than 3,500 troops from Australia, as well as over one-thousand Māori. Total losses among the two armies are estimated to be around 440 men. The war ended in a ceasefire, although the British claimed that they had won the war.,

1861 · The Central Otago Gold Rush

After discovery of gold in Gabriel's Gully, hundreds of miners and precious metal hunters flocked to New Zealand to be a part of the frenzy. This influx of people caused new settlements to pop up and different innovation techniques to begin. After a few years of steady success, the gold began to be more difficult to find. While some stayed, most of the prospectors left until most of the settlements, which they had founded, became Ghost Towns with only a few residents staying around.  

1887 · New Zealands's First National Park

Tongariro National Park was the sixth national park established in the world and the first in New Zealand. In the center of the park there lies three active volcanic mountains (Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro). it is home to the famed Tongariro Alpine Crossing day hike and has been recognized as a World Heritage Site for all its natural values.
