Name Meaning

Altered form of French Dejoux: habitational name, with fused preposition de ‘from’, denoting someone from Joux, the name of several places in the eastern part of France. The altered form is based on an archaic spelling of the name, de Iou. Compare Deyoe .

Americanized form of French Canadian Dion 3, itself an altered form of French Guyon . Compare Deo 3.

History: Christian Deyo alias Chrétien De Joux married Jeanne Wibau or Verbeau in France c. 1642. He emigrated to North America via Germany in 1675 and was one of the founding settlers in New Paltz, NY, in 1675–78. He had one son, Pierre (born in France), and this one four sons, three of whom (Abraham, Christian, and Hendricus) had children of their own. Christian Deyo is listed in the (US) National Huguenot Society's register of qualified Huguenot ancestors and also in the similar register of the Huguenot Society of America. — Some of the American bearers of the surname Deyo are descendants of Jean Guyon du Buisson from France, one of the earliest settlers on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River in New France (see Guyon ). His descendant Joseph Dion, born in QC in 1810 to Benoit Guyon alias Dion, became known as Joseph Deyo alias Deo after he settled in NY in the 1850s (see also Deo ).
