1906 · Saving Food Labels

Age 1

The first of many consumer protection laws which ban foreign and interstate traffic in mislabeled food and drugs. It requires that ingredients be placed on the label.

Age 1

Between the state's entry into the Union and 1906, 27 people were executed by hanging in Minnesota. Public opinion soon shifted against the death penalty in the state and was formally abolished in 1911. Since its abolishment, there have been 23 attempts to reinstate the death penalty, but none of these bills passed the state legislature.

Scottish: habitational name from a place in Huntingdonshire (now part of Cambridgeshire), so called from Old English hramsa ‘wild garlic’ + ēg ‘island’, ‘low-lying land’. There are other places in England called Ramsey, but the one in Huntingdonshire is almost certainly the source of the surname. The usual spelling of the surname in Scotland is Ramsay .
