When Angus Mackay was born on 28 January 1920, in Halkirk, Caithness, Scotland, United Kingdom, his father, David Robertson MacKay, was 49 and his mother, Elizabeth Mackay, was 37. He died on 8 August 1944, in Dunkirk, Nord, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France, at the age of 24, and was buried in Ranville, Calvados, Lower Normandy, France.

    The Kilmarnock War Memorial was built to pay tribute to all residents of Kilmarnock who fought in World War I. After World War II, additions were made adding the names of those who gave their lives in World War II.
