When James Haughton was born on 5 May 1795, in County Carlow, Ireland, his father, Samuel Pearson Haughton, was 46 and his mother, Mary Pim, was 32. He married Mrs. Mary Anne Haughton in 1822, in County Cork, Ireland. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 4 daughters. He died on 20 February 1873, in County Dublin, Ireland, at the age of 77, and was buried in Mount Jerome Cemetery & Crematorium, Mountjerome, St Catherine's, County Dublin, Ireland.
